I don't really like the way the episode is starting... but we'll see. They need one major, badass, wickedly violent thing to happen in every episode. If they pull that off in the first episode, we'll know we're back in the saddle again.

Anyone else still watching?

Well this is the 2nd hurricane I've been away from home, prayers are sent out and "batten down the hatches" all along the east coast. I'm worried about Mrs Colt with big bad storm and me sitting here with great weather. Mrs Colt did say the storm took a turn and SHOULD hit a glancing blow back in Va, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, last time I was on the road and storm hit it took the neighbors 2 days with chainsaws to get family out to safety.

Please say a prayer for all in Earl's path.
TO: The American People

Thanks

For only the second time in my adult life, I am not ashamed of my country. I want to thank the hard working American people for paying $242 thousand dollars plus additional expenses for my vacation in Spain. My daughter Sasha, several long-time family friends, my personal staff and various guests had a wonderful time. Honestly, you just haven't lived until you have stayed in a $2,500.00 per night suite at a 5-Star luxury hotel. We only booked 70 rooms for our friends, staff and family. Thank you also for the use of Air Force 2 and the 70 Secret Service personnel who tagged along to be sure we were safe and cared for at all times.

Air Force 2 only used 47,500 gallons of jet fuel for this trip and carbon emissions were a mere 1,031 tons of CO2. It costs only $11,500 per hour to operate Air Force 2 and each additional plane for the other members of our party group. These are only rough estimates, but they are close (who's counting?). That's quite a carbon footprint as my good friend Al Gore would say, so we must ask the American citizens to drive smaller, more fuel efficient cars and drive less too, so we can lessen our combined carbon footprint.

I know times are hard and millions of you are struggling to put food on the table and trying to make ends meet. I do appreciate your sacrifice and do hope you find work soon. I was really exhausted after Barack took our family on a luxury vacation in Maine a few weeks ago. I just had to get away for a few days. Will write more from Martha's Vineyard where we will spend our sixth vacation this year with more of our family and friends.

So I figured I'd post it.

I'll start with the caveat that I'm not a great teacher, but I try to do my job. It is nice to be recognized in a way which is more authentic than some "teacher of the year" award which always seems to go to district office suck-ups

I've had three students from last year visit this week so far. Apparently this is the second week of school for a lot of our community colleges. While I have my share of students go off to universities, my school is lower middle class, so there really isn't much money to go directly to a university unless you got on the ball and secured a ton of scholarships.

Anyway... they were all excited to come back and visit the grumpy old man who put them through the ringer last year (easily evading our roaming security guards). Each one of them said that they were in good shape for their English classes. The first one who showed up said "Mr. K, the stuff we're learning in our English class is the exact same stuff you taught us last year." I asked "Is that... a good thing?" "Of course it is!" I guess a lot of their fellow collegians are lost, confused, and have no idea what the hell they are doing. Of course, most of them are older folks who haven't been in school in years.

One said that she was doing a philosophy paper which required her to compare her best teacher to her worst teacher (I'm guessing something about epistemology?) and she said she was using me as the former (and one of the guys on campus I don't like as her worst).

Then I opened the door after lunch and one of my new girls came in and said "I got a job thanks to you!" I was a bit confused... then she said that the cover letter, application, and resume she created in my class last week (due as a project tomorrow) and the interview activities we did got her the very first job she applied for. And the girl in front of her said the exact same thing.

With all the bad shit and waste I see (kids being thrown away by their parents, kids going down the wrong roads, and the really horrible tragedies we see every year of suicide, crime, etc.)... I have to say... today was pretty good.

I just got back from my Grandparent's house. My Grandfather passed away this morning about a minute before we arrived at 7:34am (roughly). We've known it was coming for years now but it's still a shock.

I'll get this updated with his USMC and other photos.

My other Grandfather died when I was about four. My Grandpa Haley has been around, well, till now. He was a big influence on my life and I think he was one of the best Grandfathers around. We made magnets with old car batteries when I was young. He took me shooting for the first time. He made it to the majority of my events (sporting, BSA, graduation, etc). I wish he could have made it up to my wedding but that just wasn't nearly in the cards.

I'm thinking about asking for a photo of his USMC tattoo.

Here's his obituary.
