Good question as my shotgun does not stay loaded for HD. I haven't used my 12ga for anything in 3+ years. I still have plenty of 2-3/4" 00buck, good choice, but a turkey load I have of mix of 3"-4,5,6, would make Mr. Bad Guy wish he'd never broke in my house.

Keep pistol 9mm/45acp for hd and AR-15 nearby.

An ounce and a quarter of #8 lead shot, five rounds in an 1897 Winchester pump with 18 1/2" barrel. Worked great shooting steel targets in Cowboy Action back a while ago....No magazine plug needed, my hunting shotgun is an O/U.....

Can't understand anybody that would use a slug for home defense in a shotgun.

A once oz slug of lead traveling at 1600 FPS is just gonna really over penetrate. I've seen picture of them coming out of the opposite side of the shoulders of a deer at 50 yards, and it wasn't a pretty sight. It would be effective against folks in a car.

Where I live I dont need to worry about over penatration as there are no neighbors and the nearest one is 1 mile away, but I do use 00 in my shotguns with slugs in the side saddle.

Bad guys may be migratory but are not considered as migratory game, so no plug would be needed anyway, that is why I have the Saiga 12 with 10 round mags for SHTF, and a couple of pumps for hunting.

Various brands of 9 pellet and 12 pellet 00 buck. I've done a lot of reading comparing the various loads and heard many pro's and con's. That said, I've decided to stick with the 00 buck. We live on ten acres, so there's minimum chance to go through a wall and hit a neighbor's house and there are no kids in our house.

Two weeks ago, the paperwork finally came through from the BATFE and I picked up my Serbu Super Shorty, which is a pistol grip shotgun only 16 1/2" in length. It'll use the 00 buck, also. And yes, the recoil is very heavy.

Who knows, you may have even gotten 20ga?!

as you can see - 12gauge, 2 3/4 size, 00 buckshot, and I can't read the '9' one.
